The ambulance service says four people suffered minor injuries, but no one required hospital treatment.

The North West Ambulance Service adds that it has stood down its major incident status.

Here's the statement in full: "We can now confirm that we have stood down from major incident status and are withdrawing resources from the scene.

"Our colleagues have assessed a total of 87 patients, with only four suffering minor injuries.

"No one required further hospital treatment, and all were discharged from the nearby rest centre.

"An operation remains in place with our partners as they continue to recover the scene."

The police, fire crews and mountain rescue teams have been making their way along this busy stretch of road this morning on the A6.

I'm standing in a lay-by just outside the village of Shap, overlooking where the West Coast Mainline runs through.

You can't actually see it because it's hidden among the fells and it's a very foggy start to the day. The wind is strong with real blustery rain coming in.

Where I am standing is just towards the entrance of the Shap Wells Hotel, which is where people from this train have been taken. Police are at the entrance to the hotel and there is a bus there as well.

"There was a flash and a bang," James Burrow, who was on the derailed service this morning, tells the BBC.

Staff quickly informed them the train had derailed, he says.

He says he was escorted off the train at 08:50 to go to a local hotel - we know that the train derailed at 06:10 and passengers began arriving at the hotel from around 07:30.

"People were confused but calm. At first we thought a car or something had hit the train," he says, adding that train staff said it was a "landslide".

He's cancelled his plans to go to Birmingham for the day, but other passengers are waiting for coaches to Preston.

• As a reminder, the cause of the derailment has not been confirmed - but a rail journalist also said earlier that rail officials believed it was caused by a landslide

We can now bring you an image of the front of the derailed train, showing damage and a windscreen covered in what appears to be mud.

Earlier we heard from railway writer Philip Haigh who said he had been told by Network Rail there had been a landslide at the site of the derailment - the BBC has not confirmed this.

National Rail has released the following update which includes a picture from the scene.

Railway writer Philip Haigh tells the BBC News channel he was told by infrastructure operator Network Rail there was a landslide at the site of the derailment.

"And that seems very likely to be the reason," Haigh says.

"Earth and muck would've spilled down onto the railway, the train has struck it, and the very front of the train, as I understand it, has derailed, and that’s what has stopped the train."

We have spoken to Network Rail directly and are expecting a statement shortly.

We've had a second statement from the North West Ambulance Service, which says it does not believe anyone has suffered any significant injuries.

It says: "North West Ambulance Service declared a major incident just before 06:30 this morning following reports of a train derailment near Shap, Cumbria, on the West Coast mainline.

"We have a full range of resources on the scene, including our Hazardous Area Response Team, and are triaging and offering welfare to all involved in the incident.

"Fortunately, we don’t believe anyone has suffered any significant injuries. There are approximately 85 passengers on board, plus train staff who are now being evacuated from the train."

We've also heard from the British Transport Police says that "passengers have been safely escorted from the train".

We heard earlier from the director of the hotel where passengers are being taken that approximately 130 passengers had arrived.

Glasgow Central station is uncharacteristically quiet around Platform 1 this morning.

Services on the West Coast mainline to London Euston typically leave from here with queues of passengers waiting to board.

But the station concourse is quiet, with just a few Avanti staff waiting on the platform.

Passengers have been warned of the major disruption to last for "days" - but many should be able to head south via Edinburgh on the East Coast Mainline.

Tim Farron, the Lib Dem MP whose Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency covers Shap, said he was "deeply concerned" to hear the news this morning.

In a post on X, he says: "My thoughts are with everyone on board the train and the emergency service workers who are now on the scene."

It seems as though trains have been stopped at a quarry near Shap, after the derailment this morning between Shap Wells and Breedon Quarry.

The police, fire and crews and ambulance are at the scene of the derailment, which is just off the A6 road.

Passengers have been taken to the nearby Shap Wells Hotel after leaving the train.

Shabeeh Hassan, director of the hotel, says approximately 130 passengers arrived from 07:30 GMT.

Hassan says there seem to be no injuries, but he tells BBC Radio Cumbria some of the passengers are in shock.

"I’m doing as much as I can just to make them comfortable," he says.

Avanti West Coast has just published a new statement:

"At 06.10hrs today, 3 November, the 0428 Avanti West Coast service from Glasgow to Euston was reported to have derailed at Shap in Cumbria.

"Our priority is the wellbeing of everyone who was board and getting them safely off the train. We are assisting emergency services who are on the scene.

"As a result, all lines are blocked north of Preston. Please do not attempt to travel north of Preston today.

"We'll provide further information in due course, but it is likely there will be significant disruption to our network for a number of days."

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has just been speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

She says her officials are in touch with the train operating companies and the rail accident investigation branch.

"Thankfully, at the moment, it appears that there are no injures," she says, echoing what she said earlier.

"We will need to make sure that we can get people off the train safely and that will be the priority at the moment."

She says she will remain in touch with the appropriate authorities to ensure the situation "comes to a safe conclusion" and "that we understand exactly what caused this to happen in the first place".

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander tells LBC Radio: "I have been informed of this incident within the last half an hour or so.

"I know that a major incident has been stood up. There are no reported injuries.

"We will work swiftly to make sure that people can get off the train safely.

"I will be remaining in constant touch with the train operating company and the railway accident investigation branch."

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander says a major incident had been declared following a train derailment near Shap in Cumbria but "there are no reported injuries".

The North West Ambulance Service says: "Following reports of a train derailment near Shap in Cumbria, the trust has dispatched resources to the scene.

"We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services.

"Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible."

They say they will publish updates when they have them.

Train firm Avanti West Coast says a train has derailed between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District in Cumbria.

All lines are blocked and it is advising people not to travel north of Preston on its services today.
